The Merchant and the Donkeys
There was once a merchant who used a number of donkeys to carry his goods to market. One day the merchant fell ill so he asked his daughter to take his wares to the town for him. The daughter loaded the donkeys for the journey but when it was time to leave they refused to move. Seeing that they were not tethered she assumed they were just being stubborn. She tried bribing them with food and coercing them with a stick but all to no avail. Eventually she returned to the house and asked her father how to get the donkeys to move.
“My apologies,” he said, “I should have explained earlier. In the evening I touch their feet with a stick and tell them they are bound. In the morning I touch them again and tell them they are free.”
The daughter followed her father’s advice and the donkeys moved off willingly.
